International Diploma Program in Astrobiology
Our universe is a dangerous place.
And you must traverse the length and breadth of our universe, in your search for extraterrestrial life.
Excitement is guaranteed.
The science and philosophy of Astrobiology is about studying the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe including the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The appreciation of the framework of Astrobiology is critical for the safety and success of our species on earth and in space.
Astrobiology begins at home.
You start with understanding the origin and tenacity of life on Earth before you set out for interstellar and intergalactic space missions.
Extremophiles are of particular interest to you.
You then look for biomarkers on planets and moons in our solar system.
You discover the concept of habitable zones.
Now you know, where to look for life in our universe – at least our kind of life. You seek out habitable zones around planets, stars and galaxies.
You wonder though, why are you looking for carbon-based life only? You let that question linger in your subconscious – this is not the time for it.
You learn about the various tools at your disposal to detect extrasolar planetary systems. And soon enough, you have discovered thousands of exoplanets, some are the size of Earth while some are Super-earths.
Your favorite tool is space-based missions. You love Kepler and Spitzer.
You have discovered a new normal.
Wait, Kepler reminds you of KIC 8462852. This thought too, you must let linger in your subconscious.
You are not yet prepared for extreme possibilities.
You are - just like some of the greatest scientists - intrigued by the very nature of reality, of intelligence and of life itself.
And then someone tells you about the Rare Earth equation.
And suddenly, even the obvious seems improbable.
You ponder over the Fermi Paradox.
You sit down and crunch numbers of Drake Equation. Your spirits are uplifted again.
Your goal is to Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
SETI is your mantra.
The fantastic seems possible.
You want to believe. Believe? You heard that before.
You very well know, there is no room to 'believe' - like a good scientist, you have made up your mind to find the evidence.
And nothing can stop you.
You shake your head with a smile; there is nothing more exciting than astrobiology.
You are in no mood to give up until you make Contact.
May the Force be with you.
